It’s a parents’ worst nightmare….or at least a very annoying one. You notice your child scratching their head, once, twice, three times and the fear sets in. Then you ask yourself, does my child have lice?
The highly communicable parasites are very common. They know no racial, ethnic or financial boundaries. Experts say lice is spread through head to head contact with an infected person. According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated six to twelve million infestations occur each year. It most commonly occurs with children ages 3 to 11.
While this can be a frustrating experience, KidSnips can help ease the difficulties associated with the discovery and treatment of lice. Jill Jensen, manager of the Deerfield KidSnips location offers this advice if you think your child has lice:
Check Hot Spots: Look at the nape of the neck, behind the ears and in the crown of the head. Nits are oval and stuck to one side of a strand of hair. If you aren’t sure whether you have discovered lice, come into to any of our 8 KidSnips salons. We will do a lice check for the same price as a haircut ($20-$22).
Get a Nit Comb: (we like the Nit Terminator comb). Use the comb to remove nits and eggs.
If you determine you have lice—don’t panic. Come into one of our KidSnips locations and get a Lice Detective Kit. We have found this to be an effective product. The $45.00 kit treats a family of four and includes mousse, a Nit Terminator comb and comb out cream
Jensen says follow through is critical. “You must get rid of every nit in the hair. Because if you don’t they stand a chance of hatching and starting all over again.”
Chances are if you have kids, you will see a case of lice during your time as a parent. This doesn’t need to be a stressful time. But it is something to take seriously. And we can help!
