5 Ways to Make Toddler Haircuts Memorable…In a Good Way.

by | Aug 30, 2019 | Parenting

Your super sweet, wiggly squiggly, and totally adorable toddler deserves a haircut that’s 100 percent fun. And any weekday this month, we’re taking $3 off toddler haircuts for the under 3 crowd — which makes it even easier to bring your toddler in for a trim and #KeepChildhoodFun for you and your little one.

Have you ever taken your toddler for a quick trim and come home afterward ready for a long nap… a very, very long nap? (And your child even needs a nap, too!)

Getting your kid’s hair cut can be stressful for both of you — and for your little one it can be downright frightening. But take a minute to put yourself in their shoes. Your toddler is taken to an unfamiliar place and has to sit completely still while a complete stranger comes at them with sharp scissors… I wouldn’t be too thrilled about that, either!

At KidSnips we believe first haircuts are important milestones that should be fun and memorable (after all, it won’t be long until your little one is driving the car and asking YOU not to change the Spotify playlist), not tear-filled, scary experiences. And we do all kinds of things to help make sure that happens, from giving them car-shaped chairs to sit in, hairstylists who actually like kids and know how to cut toddler’s hair, and games to play or movies to watch on iPads during the whole thing (with your permission, of course).

There are also a few things you can do to prepare your toddler for the big event and reassure them that everything is going to be okay. Check out these 5 tips to make your toddler’s haircut experience a great one.

1. Explain what to expect.

Even adults can get a little nervous about brand new experiences, so we can’t blame our kids for being on edge if they don’t know what will happen during their haircut. To help ease their nerves, take some time before their appointment to talk about what will be fun about their haircut—for example, if you bring your kid to KidSnips, they’ll get to sit in a cool car-shaped chair, play games on an iPad, and they’ll even get a prize afterward. Be sure to tell them what might seem a little scary too, so they’re prepared for it. Let them know that the clippers will make a loud noise, but if it’s too loud, their very nice stylist can use scissors instead. And even though the scissors might look pointy, they’re totally safe and won’t hurt them at all.

2. Remind them that you’ll be there.

The idea of getting taken to a brand new place can seem daunting to kids—and they might be under the impression that they’ll be left alone with their stylist, who they may not have met before. Reassure your child that mom or dad will be with them every step of the way. And if they get nervous, you’ll be right by their side to hold their hand—and they can even sit in your lap if they’re feeling really scared.

3. Bring a favorite toy.

Before you leave for your child’s haircut, ask them to pick out one toy to take with them. This could be a teddy bear for them to cuddle if they need some comfort or a toy car to keep them occupied and sitting still. Either way, bringing a familiar object to an unfamiliar environment can help them feel more at ease.

4. Let them watch you get a haircut.

It’s a good idea to schedule your adult haircut right before your child’s so they can watch and get an idea of what the process will look like. Seeing a stylist use scissors or clippers on mom or dad will help them realize that they won’t get hurt during the appointment. You can even talk them through what’s going on as it happens. If possible, schedule both of your appointments with the same stylist, so your child has a chance to observe how kind and friendly the stylist is before they start cutting their hair.

5. Take them to a place that gets kids.

Ok, we admit we are a little biased about this, but it’s hard for a toddler to have a great haircut experience at one of those super chi-chi hair salons that’s going for the “quiet, spa-like atmosphere.” Or one that may be a little too hip and have a tad too much attitude for anyone under 16 or over 35. Or for the ones that approach haircuts more like an assembly line. That’s why we started KidSnips because we believe toddlers need some real TLC and you need to have a less stressful experience all around. All our stylists are pros at giving haircuts to squirmy, shy, and scared kids, and we’ve got lots of techniques to help them feel safe and comfortable. We don’t rush appointments, either, and we’ll work with your child for as long as it takes to make sure they leave our store looking great. In short, at KidsSnips we love working with kids, and we’re on a mission to #KeepChildhoodFun…for everyone.

So for a happier haircut, schedule your appointment at KidSnips today. And this month, even your wallet will be happier at KidSnips, because we’re offering $3 off weekday toddler haircuts from September 1–30, 2019.
